Humanities

Intent:

At St. Michael's Primary School, the teaching of Humanities (History and Geography) is intended to inspire curiosity and a deep understanding of the world in which our students live. Through the study of history and geography, we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who understand the past, engage with the present, and are prepared for the future. Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, encourage empathy, and cultivate a sense of local and global responsibility. By exploring historical events and geographical concepts, children will develop an appreciation for different cultures, diverse perspectives, and the interconnectedness of the world.

Implementation:

Our Humanities curriculum at St. Michael’s is delivered through a progressive and engaging approach, integrating history and geography across year groups, ensuring both subjects are taught in a way that is stimulating and accessible. History lessons will explore key historical periods, events, and figures, enabling students to make connections between the past and their own lives. Geography lessons will focus on understanding the physical and human geography of the world, with an emphasis on both local and global environments. We will employ a variety of teaching methods, including interactive lessons, educational trips, guest speakers, and the use of digital resources, to provide hands-on, real-world learning experiences. Assessment will be ongoing through observations, pupil voice, and cumulative quizzes to track students' progress and understanding.

Impact:

The impact of our Humanities curriculum will be evidenced by students’ ability to articulate an understanding of historical and geographical concepts, as well as their awareness of their place in the world. By the time students leave St. Michael's Primary School, they will have a strong sense of historical perspective, geographical knowledge, and an understanding of global issues. Students will develop skills such as critical thinking, research, and inquiry, which will support them in their future academic endeavours and in becoming informed, compassionate, and active citizens. Through our Humanities curriculum, we aim to foster a lifelong love of learning and an appreciation for the world around them.
