PSHE at St Michael’s CE Primary School

    Intent

At St Michael’s, our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is designed to support the development of the whole child, helping every pupil to flourish spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally, and culturally.

We aim to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead happy, healthy and responsible lives. Through our PSHE curriculum, we intend to:

    • Promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils in line with our Christian values.

    • Support children in developing resilience, self-esteem, emotional literacy and empathy.

    • Teach children how to build and maintain healthy relationships and how to stay safe, including online.

    • Enable children to understand and manage their emotions, make informed choices, and recognise their responsibilities as citizens of modern Britain.

    • Deliver a curriculum that fulfils the statutory requirements for Relationships Education, Health Education, and other key aspects of PSHE.

    Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is taught in a carefully sequenced and progressive way to ensure age-appropriate learning from EYFS to Year 6.

    • In EYFS, we use the Think Equal programme, which introduces young children to foundational concepts of emotional intelligence, equality, respect, and wellbeing through stories, discussion, and creative activities. This builds a strong foundation in emotional and social development from the earliest stages.

    • From Year 1 to Year 6, we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work, which provides a consistent whole-school approach to PSHE. Jigsaw combines personal, social and emotional education with mindfulness, supporting mental wellbeing and reflective thinking.

    • The curriculum is divided into six half-termly units across the year:

      1. Being Me in My World

      2. Celebrating Difference

      3. Dreams and Goals

      4. Healthy Me

      5. Relationships

      6. Changing Me (which includes age-appropriate RSE)

    • Lessons are taught weekly, using structured lesson plans that include discussion, role-play, stories, reflection, and practical activities.

    • Statutory Relationships and Health Education is embedded within Jigsaw’s framework, and we ensure full coverage of the DfE statutory guidance.

    • Our approach is inclusive, supporting pupils with SEND and those from diverse backgrounds, ensuring all children feel valued and able to participate fully.

    • Learning is enhanced through special events such as Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Awareness, Online Safety Day, and community projects.

    Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is seen in the behaviour, attitudes, relationships and wellbeing of our pupils. At St Michael’s, children:

    • Demonstrate high levels of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and empathy towards others.

    • Build positive, respectful relationships and recognise the importance of inclusion and kindness.

    • Are confident in recognising and managing risks, including how to keep themselves safe online and in the wider world.

    • Can speak confidently about their feelings, goals, values and rights.

    • Understand how to maintain their physical and mental health and wellbeing.

    • Are prepared for the next stages of their education and life in modern Britain, with a strong moral foundation rooted in our Christian ethos.

We assess PSHE through teacher observations, pupil voice, class discussions, and work in PSHE books or floor books. The wellbeing and personal development of every child is a priority, and our PSHE curriculum supports each learner to thrive, both now and in the future.
