Physical Education (PE) at St Michael’s CE Primary School

    Intent

At St Michael’s, we strive to do our best and to inspire all pupils to enjoy being physically active, to develop their skills, and to understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. We believe that PE is a vital part of every child’s education and personal development, promoting teamwork, resilience, confidence and well-being.

    Our aims are to:

    • Deliver high-quality PE lessons that are engaging, inclusive and progressive using the PE Passport scheme.

    • Ensure all children develop fundamental movement skills and build confidence in a range of physical activities.

    • Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship and respect through a variety of team sports and games.

    • Provide a wide range of opportunities for children to participate in competitive sport and physical activity, both within and beyond the school day.

    • Promote healthy habits and physical literacy that pupils can carry with them throughout life.

    Implementation

We follow the PE Passport scheme of work, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. This supports staff in delivering high-quality lessons that develop children’s agility, balance, coordination, and understanding of tactics, rules and teamwork.

    • In EYFS, PE focuses on developing core movement skills, confidence and control through fun and active sessions, both indoors and outdoors.

    • In Key Stage 1, children develop fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, and begin to apply them in simple games and activities.

    • In Key Stage 2, pupils refine these skills and apply them in more competitive settings, learning to play a variety of sports including football, netball, hockey, cricket, tennis, rounders and athletics.

In addition to weekly PE lessons:

    • Pupils have access to a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, including dance, football, gymnastics, athletics and multi-sports.

    • We actively take part in inter-school competitions and tournaments through our local sports partnership, giving children the opportunity to represent the school and develop pride and team spirit.

    • Children are given the opportunity to develop leadership skills, especially in Upper Key Stage 2, through supporting younger children or helping with sports events.

    • We promote physical activity throughout the school day with active breaks, lunchtime activities and whole-school events such as sports days and fitness challenges.

    Impact

At St Michael’s, our PE curriculum ensures that children:

    • Develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in a wide range of physical activities.

    • Build positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity, showing perseverance, teamwork and fair play.

    • Experience success, enjoyment and challenge in sport and exercise, whether individually or as part of a team.

    • Understand the value of physical activity for their physical and mental well-being.

    • Leave our school with a strong foundation for continued participation in physical activity and sport at secondary school and beyond.

We assess PE through teacher observation, performance in lessons and events, and pupil voice. We celebrate all achievements in sport – from daily effort to competitive success – and aim to ensure that every child finds joy, motivation and confidence in being active.
